More Frostgrave. More Hail Caesar!

Frostgrave / Hail Caesar!

Hello everyone.  Not a whole lot to share with you compared to other posts. I've been busy working with Kickstarter and still find time to game , but I tried .. TRIED to take less photos!

Here's from the last games of Frostgrave ... but before that, Tim's awesome Elephant of Carthage!

We introduced a new thing in our game - wandering monster warbands. Here a Demonic force followed by lesser demons roamed around the battlefield..

They got right into the thick of my forces.. and chewed me up pretty good.

Split half the forces to take on Tim's warband...

His fellows all creeping around the buildings.. while I take on demons.. ha ha!

Barbarian gets ganged up on!

While some of my fellows try to take on the enemy rangers...

Oiuch. There was not much left of that game. I either got bone dart to the face, died to demons, or my guys fled. I think I made off with two treasures, one for slaying the Demon and one for carrying a piece off. A loss for me, and a whole bunch of fellows including the apprentice knocked out!

We did the living Museum next.  Basically you have these 6 statues in the middle, pick up their treasure - and one statue randomly comes to life!

 Our makeshift museum

Only one way we were all heading..

Both sides used the statues as shields.. then they'd come to life and kill us!

In the end, I made it off with most of the treasure and got more experience for fighting the statues. Tim managed to get off the table with two of the treasures but his apprentice suffered some injuries to the arm!  His leaders are full of injuries!

Hail Caesar! Tower Capture

In our latest Hail Caesar! Game we played a game of capture the tower. The objective was that only one unit could stay within 6 inchs of the tower, uncontested. That means a unit could not be shot at , have an enemy within 6 inches of the tower, nothing in proximity, have fought, etc.

Here is either side of the field.

Tim's right - Numidian Cavalry, an Elephant, Elite Carthaginians with a small unit of support behind it, followed by medium troops with more small support behind it.  Commander in the middle.  On his left there are Heavy Libyan spearmen with small unit of support, and another group of medium infantry / small units behind them! Another unit of Numidian Cavalry and skirmishers. He had a lot of units for one commander!

The romans on my left in the first division were one small Celtic Cavalry unit, Three units of Small hastati and skirmishers in the rear. The right division was a Greek commander with one small unit of Hoplites, two units of medium infantry numidians and an elephant on the far right.

Both sides got rolling rather quickly.

My light cavalry go after the elephant, hurting it a bit.

The greeks and numidians on my right take the right side of the tower along with their Elephant.

My Cavalry evade the slow elephants charging.

Tim has his elite Carthaginians barrel into adjacent units and has to fight two units at once, along with one supporting unit of Hastati.

And.. it did not go well. The Romans destroyed the elites on the first turn and wiped out their support as well.

Elephant is harassed once again.

These forces get closer.

The elephant chases off the cavalry again while my skirmishers harass the next unit of medium numidains..

The Numidains chase the skirmishers away but don't quite reach the Roman lines.

Tim again charges a single unit on to two - the small hoplites and the numidian forces.

Tim's Cavalry finally catch up with mine.

The fight on this side had a lot of fellows.. Libyans , Hoplites, and Numidians fighting each other with lots of numidians in support!

Tim's elephant wheels round, ready to charge the flank of some Hastati.

My general and his foreign bodyguard join the fray!

Tim ended up charging a unit and destroyed it before it could support but the rest of the Hastati made it in.

They drove off the Medium infantry and all turned to face the Elephant.

Neither side was victorious on this side of the field, lots of fighting!

Tim had charged the Elephant into the Romans and had at first made some leeway . . but the Romans slowly made a comeback - though their General was wounded.

Pushing the Elephant back.

Eventually the Libyan's lost and gave ground. Both sides frantically tried to rally their men!

My light cavalry the whole time were able to evade and avoid the Numidian cavalry and ended up breaking the weakened medium unit that the Hastati had fought before.

Tim's orders were so bad this go round.. his skirmishers and cavalry seen in the above photo only now just started to roll in!

But they rolled in quick! Got behind the Elephant!

By this time , though, the Carthage elephant was destroyed and all that remained on the other side was Numidian Cavalry that had failed to properly harass the Roman rear and light support that had somehow survived the Roman onslaught.

In the back you can see some units .. that just didnt listen well to orders.

Eventually, Tim orderede his Shaken Libyan spearmen back into the fight after rallying them a couple times.. but they were defeated, and Tim's army was forced to retreat as it had become broken!

So in the end - A Roman Victory, not by way of capturing a tower, but through defeating enough units to break the enemy.

This game was quite fun, and both sides got a lot of fighting and horse-skirmishing in.  I think my celts outclassed Tim's cavalry this go round through sheer luck, but one issue he was having was the amount of units to one commander. With something like 10-12 units, there was no way he would pass every roll so he struggled moving a good chunk of his army.  I believe he will have another commander in the future to deal with this issue.

That's it for now! Frostgrave tomorrow, then more Hail Caesar! next week. I am currently working on some principes in my own collection and hope I can get through them fairly quickly.  Chainmail doesn't take long to drybrush, right?

Thanks for reading!
